Answer to the question “What is the name of the prince in Disney’s 1959 animated film “Sleeping Beauty”?

Despite Disney’s focus on “happily ever after” in its earliest princess movies, the first couple of films didn’t bother to give distinct identities to the princesses’ suitors. The leading man in 1937’s “Snow White,” for example, is known to most people as simply “the Prince,” while Cinderella’s main squeeze in the 1950 animated classic goes by “Prince Charming.” The first Disney prince to get an actual name was Prince Phillip in 1959’s “Sleeping Beauty.” Voiced by actor Bill Shirley (who also provided the singing voice for Freddy in “My Fair Lady”), Phillip is the charismatic, valiant son of King Hubert, and Princess Aurora’s betrothed since birth. He falls in love with her when she’s living under an assumed identity in the forest, and then later battles Maleficent to save her.

Unlike his predecessors, he’s much more than just an extra in the movie — which presented some unique challenges for the artists tasked with drawing him. Animator Milt Kahl was up to the challenge, though. “The expressions and things that work there — I’ve always been very pleased with that,” fellow directing animator Marc Davis said of Kahl’s work on Phillip, according to D23.
