Answer to the question “Who composed the Moonlight Sonata?

Ludwig van Beethoven knew how to incorporate sad, serious, and even spooky elements into one single sonata. He was the mastermind behind the popular Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor, Quasi una fantasia, roughly translated to “almost a fantasy.” While the groundbreaking sonata was completed in 1801 and Beethoven performed it many times, it didn’t get the name Moonlight Sonata until 1932, after his death.

In a piece of writing, German music critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab compared the first movement of the sonata to the moonlight shining down on a boat on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. Within a short period of time, the name Moonlight Sonata had stuck.
